Affiliate disclosure
Basisbook earns money from some outbound links. Here is exactly how that works, what it does not change, and the tool we recommend that pays us nothing at all.
Basisbook is free to read, and it is funded partly by affiliate commissions. When we link to a crypto tax tool and you sign up after clicking, the tool may pay us a commission. It never costs you anything extra, and — this is the part that matters — it never changes how we rank or describe a product. We are telling you this up front because a guide that hides how it earns money cannot be trusted on the products it earns money from.
How the links work
Affiliate links on this site point to a /go/ address on our own domain, which redirects to the tool. Every such link is marked with rel="sponsored nofollow", the honest technical signal to search engines that it is a paid link, and each is disclosed in the text near where it appears. We currently have affiliate relationships, or expect to, with tools including Koinly, CoinLedger, TokenTax, ZenLedger and Blockpit. Until a given tool's own tracking link is live, the /go/ link simply points to the tool's homepage — you are never sent anywhere misleading.
What the money never buys
A commission never buys a ranking, a rating, or a kind word. Our software rankings are set by the same six factors for every tool, and we criticise tools we earn from where they fall short — noting where a US-first product is weak abroad, or where a cheaper tool struggles with DeFi. We also tell readers when the honest answer is to use a free tier or a spreadsheet and pay nobody, including us. If a payout ever conflicted with the correct recommendation, the recommendation wins; that rule is the whole reason this page exists.
The pick that pays us nothing
To prove the point, one of our top recommendations, CoinTracker, runs no consumer affiliate programme, so it earns this site nothing — we recommend it purely because it is good at what it does. The same goes for suggesting a plain spreadsheet for a simple year: it pays us nothing and is often the right call. We would rather have your trust than a marginal commission, because the trust is what makes the commissions possible at all. None of this is tax advice, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any tool named here.
